Now that winter is over, you’re finally ready to greet spring by having a nice relaxing swim in your pool. However, jumping right into the water on the first day of the season isn’t always a good idea. Your pool still needs to be prepared, and if you want to get a good start this spring, you have to implement the following procedures before diving in:
The first thing you need to do to start prepping your pool for the summer months is to remove the pool cover. Throughout winter, your pool cover may have collected a mixture of ice and snow, so it’s best to clean the cover of any debris before taking it off. Once the cover is removed, make sure to completely dry it off before returning it to storage.
Before you start turning on swimming pool pumps, the water level of your pool has to be midway up the skimmer. To do this, you can use a garden hose to add water. While waiting for the water to increase, you can take care of other things like plumbing the pump, checking on the other swimming pool equipment, and replacing the drain plugs. Just be sure that the breakers are off before you begin.
Once the water reaches the desired level, you can prime and ready your pool equipment. In this step, you have to make sure that the winterizing plugs have been removed from the returns and skimmers. This is also the perfect time to check your equipment for leaks. If there are leaks present, mark them so it’s easy to identify which ones need to be repaired. If there are no leaks, then it should be okay to let the pumps run.
If you see debris like leaves on the bottom of your swimming pool, it’s a good time to vacuum them out. If you’re vacuuming through your filter system, switch your valve to waste. This setup allows the debris to bypass the filter and be flushed out. During this process, the water level will decrease so fill it up once again with the hose.
Now that your pool is clean, take a sample of the swimming pool water. Make sure to take it from the deep end while the pump and the filter are running. It’s important to obtain the proper balance of chemicals for your pool to remain safe and healthy, and to stay clean.
Bearing these procedures in mind, your swimming pool should be ready to use throughout spring.
